Selection of 15 High School Students Celebrated in California Climate Champions Program Kick-Off
Selected Students Will Be Trained to Communicate the Importance of Climate-Related Issues
Sacramento, CA – March 18, 2008 – Officials from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the British Council met today to announce the selection of 15 California high school students, aged 16-18, who will participate in the inaugural California Climate Champions Program. Throughout the next year, the Climate Champions will serve as climate issue liaisons in their communities and engage with others to make a difference, through local, national, and international projects. They also will participate in a “climate camp” in California and engage in an online peer network to share ideas and encourage others to get involved.
“Climate change is an issue that is increasingly becoming a top concern for California students. We received a large number of wonderful applications from students across the state voicing a deep concern for the state of the environment,” said Mary Nichols, Chair of CARB. “The chosen students are very passionate about climate change and are eager to make an impact by communicating with their peers and community on a local and global scale.”
Through a partnership with the British Council, CARB is working with the Climate Champions programs to encourage the involvement of California’s young people in climate change issues. Three of the California champions will travel internationally as part of the British Council’s International Climate Champions program, including a trip to London this week and to Kobe, Japan in May to attend a summit of the G8 Environment Ministers.
